is a program of Funkamentalz, formed in 1997 by Wade Colwell-Sandoval and Baba Oyadare Ranson III with the
mission of supporting academic learning and promoting social consciousness through the expression of hip hop music (see www.funkamentalz.com). Over the past 15 years, Funkamentalz has been instrumental as a creative resource for many educational institutions
and social movements. In 2012, the evolution of Funkamentalz features a new training program. (MC)2, facilitated by Co-Founder
Wade Colwell-Sandoval (see www.wadeintheworld.com) and co-produced by Co-Founder Baba Oyadare Ranson III (see www.phenomenallife.com) with the mission of expanding the worldwide community of oral tradition musical catalysts for leadership
and learning. Wade and his family recently relocated from Seattle, WA to Brooklyn, NY in 2011. Baba Oyadare Ranson III and
his family currently reside in Texas where he continues his educational leadership as a multi-media producer, learning mentor
and motivational life coach. Vision (MC)2 envisions a world of MUSIC which is a … Movement
of oral tradition musical catalysts aiming to increase Understanding, build personal
and collective Strength, expand human possibilities through Imagination
and model a Compassion for worldwide harmony and dignity. People and Process (MC)2 is offered to both youth and adult
allies who have an expressed motivation to develop their skills as creative artists and agents for social change. The
program is facilitated by Funkamentalz co-Founder Wade Colwell-Sandoval who brings 20 years of experience as a teaching artist
and educational advocate. The program can be customized for an in-school course, after-school activity, or
organized retreat. The logistics and specific design will be envisioned in a scheduled collaborative planning
session (contact Wade at xochiyolotl@gmail.com or 206.679.7931) (MC)2 is a multi-stage process that aligns to the acronym M.U.S.I.C. representing the
themes of Movement, Understanding, Strength, Imagination and Compassion. In stage 1, Movement, participants will look at the
legacy and social impact of past and present musical artists dedicated to social change. In stage 2, Understanding, participants
will explore identity, the power of story, and the dynamics of inter-personal communication. In stage 3, Strength, participants
will discover their unique gifts, interests, resilience and the healing properties of sound and music for both performer
and audience. In stage 4, Imagination, participants practice creative techniques for generating a vision of unlimited possibilities
as music catalysts. In stage 5, Compassion, participants will explore the transformational value of empathy and how a music
catalyst is driven by service to others. Finally, (MC)2 culminates with a graduation ceremony and performance by the participants. Reason and Resonance Our core
belief is that music is a catalyst for the best capacities of the human spirit. So as (MC)2 launches in 2012, we pay homage
to an oral tradition legacy from worldwide cultures that have passed on the gifts of melody, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition
as a means of continuing and remembering the human story and condition. The evolution of music is a fascinating study that
has a common thread of connecting to the spirit for both performer and audience. The possibilities for music to be instrumental
in transforming the world into a more just, caring, and joyful place is at the core of the reason for preparing and propelling
a new community of oral tradition music catalysts. As we express in a Funkamentalz song “First we need the music. Then
we need a voice… with a message… to spark a movement.” The impact is designed to resonate
beyond (MC)2 just as a musical tone produces a lasting effect of powerful reverberation. Combining the creative spirit with
a sense of purpose to others is part of the growing educational renaissance that is taking place worldwide. Participants of
(MC)2 will be ongoing resources for their respective communities as catalysts for leadership and learning. Furthermore, (MC)2
will link oral tradition musical catalysts from other parts of the world together to network, build ideas and inspire positive
action. Support and Sustainability (MC)2 is part of a collaborative think tank of social leadership that includes Martha Haakmat and Dr. Eddie Moore
Jr. of Brooklyn Friends School (NYC), Benjie Howard and Maketa Wilborn of New Wilderness Project (Seattle), Monica Amaro of
The School at Columbia University (NYC), Alicia Woods of Muckleshoot Tribal College (Auburn, WA), Lizette Dolan of The Athenian
School (Concord, CA), Willie Adams of Head-Royce (Oakland), Jada Drew of Africana CHANGE (Greensboro), Sara Momii Roberts
of LREI (NYC), Teddy Wright of Passages Northwest (Seattle), Matt Bolano of St. Ignatius College Preparatory (San Francisco),
Sara Gonzales of OUTSPOKEN! (Tucson), Jorge Zeballos of Guilford College (Greensboro), Gary Howard of Gary Howard Institute
(Mineapolis), Tarah Fleming of StartDialog (Oakland), Sean Arce of TUSD Ethnic Studies (Tucson), Shakti Butler of World Trust
Educational Services (Oakland), Roberto Ascalon of ArtsCorp (Seattle), Dawn-Elissa Fischer of San Francisco State University,
and Kenya Masala of Source Consulting Group (Austin). The combination of the resonating force of musical
expressions from an ever-growing circle of socially-caring artists supported by a community of shared purpose will insure
sustainability. The best model for longevity is for participants to apply their skills and passions as models and teachers
for their peers and younger generations. The encouragement of sharing, teaching, and showcasing of the (MC)2 experience and
beyond will further extend the impact on the community. |
